BITS & PIECES www.postmagazine.com 6 POST JAN/FEB 2020 FIRSTCOM MUSIC TURNS FORTY DALLAS — For FirstCom Music (www.firstcom. com), 2020 marks the company's 40 th anniver- sary. Formed in Dallas, TX, in 1980 with a staff of four, FirstCom was a broadcast services business focused on the radio industry. Since that time, FirstCom has grown to become a leading music publisher and production music library. In 1985, the company made a big move by intro- ducing broadcast producers to a new era of innova- tion with the release of one of the first production music libraries on CD. At the time, many studios did not have compact disc players. To close the technology gap, the company offered its clients CD players as part of the music licensing service — and onward moved the digital age. Recognized as an industry leader in the 1990s, the company was acquired by the world's then largest indie music publisher, Zomba Enterprises. Soon after, Firstcom introduced an online music library and became one of the first to allow users to download music directly to their hard drives. The 2000s saw the company become an im- portant piece in the BMG acquisition of Zomba Enterprises, and in turn of the acquisition of BMG by Universal Music Group. As we enter 2020, FirstCom Music is a key part of Universal Publishing Production Music. "FirstCom Music continues to lead the way as a creative company with a long history of music innova- tion," says Ken Nelson, FirstCom Music executive producer & global head of production for UPPM. "Our producers and composers consistently create high-end, relevant music that emotionally engages the very best creators and their audi- ences. Labels such as Capitol Studio Masters and Front Runners lead the way, as we continue to provide hard-to-find gems, and authentic archi- val recordings like our recently released Chappell Vaults series." The company's in-house production team boasts over 100 years of experience guiding a repertoire that now includes over 50 labels, 285,000 individual tracks, the largest published stems library in the industry and Grammy-nominated artists such as Adrian Quesada of the Black Pumas. "We're proud to have established a long history of exceeding the needs and expectations of content creators," adds Billy Stover, VP of sales & market- ing. "As we move forward, we continue to invest in products like our Extension for Adobe that allow creators to work with the ease and flexibility they've become accustomed to when engaging with the exceptional music we produce."
