94 The Costume Designer Winter 2020 SCRAPBOOK The 2006 film Dreamgirls follows the tale of a Motown trio and stars Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose. Costume Designer Sharen Davis tried to capture the essence of The Supremes in the 120 cos- tumes she built. She found her inspiration in album covers, and Bob Mackie's costumes in the late 1960s for Cher and Dionne Warwick. Davis explains, "What was very challenging was the director wanted them to wear exactly the same thing and their body types were completely different. Beyoncé was so easy, she would try on anything, and no matter how weird she would always look good." Davis worked with costume illustrator Felipe Sanchez to create the looks. She says, "I just loved working with him. We are so in tune to each other." On January 25, 2020, at 6 pm, CDG Movie Night will screen Dreamgirls. Davis will be interviewed by Felipe Sanchez following the screening. Dreamgirls Sharen Davis
