The costume is a cross between a flamenco and can-can dancer with a streak of Rio Carnival performer. Comprised of a black silk bandeau with black spangles, a hot pink streamer radiates from the pinched center bust over the left shoulder to the floor. The matching dancing skirt has a bold "U" cut out of the front yoke and six layers of ruffles descending from the low hip to the ankle with a center slit edged in ruffles. It has a bold black-and-white oversized Hawaiian floral, is lined in hot pink, and is accessorized with a large white straw hat with orange silk flowers. On a man- nequin, the piece seems more demure. But in actuality, the matching black silk bikini brief was a necessity as the skirt was never stationary. Marilyn lifted and twirled, snapping it open and closed to great effect throughout the song. Allegedly, Monroe's then-husband, Joe DiMaggio, refused to be photographed on set with his wife wearing the racy cos- tume. Originally from the Debbie Reynolds Collection, the garments garnered three times the maximum estimate at Julien's Auctions with the hammer price of $280,000. The original costume illustration in gouache signed by Travilla also sold for $11,520. Travilla at Auction
