8 The Costume Designer Winter 2020
EDITOR'S NOTE
During my first year at the helm of The Costume Designer mag-
azine, I had the pleasure of photographing Michael Kaplan and
his costumes for Star Trek. I remember the garments were so
top secret, we had to shoot them where they were being stored.
Needless to say, planning the cover sight unseen, made me very
nervous. Fortunately, the facility was equipped for sculpting
and when I saw the large ceiling fixtures, my nerves subsided.
Photographer Robert Reiff also helped quell my fear with his
enthusiasm and large light kit. I thought Michael looked like the rock star Costume
Designer he is, and it remains one of my favorite covers. I recall our fascinating con-
versation as Robert set up his innumerable lights.
I asked Michael how he so consistently creates such resonant characters. His
response: he follows his instinct. Who else would dare put Brad Pitt in a pink che-
nille bathrobe with steaming teacups as Tyler Durden in Fight Club, or Sean Young
as Rachel in a chevroned fur coat which conjured film noir through the shattered
glass of the future in Blade Runner. Michael reimagined science fiction, from Star
Trek to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It is with great delight that he is gracing
the cover once again on the occasion of his Career Achievement Award, this time in
a portrait by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. Like any EIC, a cover shot by
such a master is a dream come true. Thank you, Annie.
I am thrilled Mary Ellen Fields is receiving our Distinguished Service Award. Her
beauty of spirit complements the perfection of her creations. Our love letter to her
is penned by Local 705 member, patternmaker and fitter Adrienne Martinez, who got
her start in Hargate's workroom.
After the continued success of our "Credit the Costume Designer" social media
campaign, it is wonderful to see Costume Design being valued. Over 50 years after
its creation, Julien's Auctions sold a William Travilla-designed dress for Marilyn
Monroe for $250,000. I attended the auction in Beverly Hills on November 1, and
the energy moving through the crowd was electrifying as the auctioneer brought
the hammer down.
The most glamorous party of the year is almost at hand, where the Guild, our
colleagues, our supporters, and our friends come together in celebration of our art
at the Costume Designer Guild Awards. The
level of work executed by this year's nomi-
nees, regardless of budget, is phenomenal.
I congratulate them, but even more impor-
tantly, I congratulate all of you, who make it
so difficult to pick the best shows because of
your expertise, your execution, your dedica-
tion, and your passion.
