garden. There are many clocks so as not to lose track of the time quickly passing. The pictures of himself posing with leaders of the world are testament to atinger's indulgence in his own vanity. The relaxed feeling of this room will allow the two men to start a profound and personal conversation. They are two radically dierent characters divided by culture, bearing the same heavy weight of their past, sense of guilt and the questioning of the nature of their faith. Bergoglio likes sharing pizzas with football supporters. atinger has retreated behind walls that he built around himself over the years and eats alone in the blue light of his TV. Both promote divergent images of the church. oth are fighting alone to keep hearing the voice of God, eventually meeting on a spiritual common ground in their quest for absolution. As in Argentina, the work of set decoration in the Vatican City had to be invisible. Every object and piece of furniture had to be made authentically in order to maintain the illusion, especially in regard to the Conclave's rituals. The thorough research and the help of the religious advisors provided some hints on the voting process happening behind closed doors, but we still had to imagine the look of some of these pieces, as there are no pictorial references available. Even the amazing recreation of the Sistine Chapel is showing signs of real life ugly fire extinguishers, loose cabling of old speakers and mundane signage. On behalf of the Art Department involved in The Two Popes from Europe and South America, working together on a film that evokes a generous and humanist view of a world that is becoming darker and more selfish each day was an important decision to make. And it oered us all the opportunity to watch two of the most accomplished actors giving esh and soul to these two complex characters. ADG A.
