www.postmagazine.com 2 POST NOV/DEC 2019 EDITOR'S NOTE t's a long-time tradition for Post's year-end issue to look at trends from throughout the industry, as well as predictions from post pros for the year ahead. This issue continues that annual effort, and you can read insight from industry minds beginning on page 16. But as much as we're offing in our print edition, there is that much more commentary on our Website, where professionals are sharing their thoughts about trends in their respective segments of the market, and outlooks for 2020. Talent from Spears & Arrows, Calabash Animation, HOBO Audio, Tactic, Ntropic, Stept Studios, Prime Focus Technologies and FrostFX are among those offering their perspective on what's taking place throughout the post production industry. Prime Focus Technologies' Anthony Matt, for example, authored an original piece that looks at "How Artificial Intelligence Tools Can Automate Video Conform & Comparison." Marko Post, of Scandinavian VFX studio FrostFX offers his take on how modern small and mid-sized VFX studios can efficiently scale up and down to avoid a build up of expenses. And Nick Martini of 10-year-old Stept Studios, which he founded with his brother as a full-ser- vice facility, reflects on the evolution of their business, which is increasingly being asked for post-only bids. Beyond our trend pieces, our Website is also hosting career profiles, including one on Andy Elliott, who is a founder and colorist at London's Directors Cut Films, and on Zoic Studios' Tehmina Beg, who recently took time out from her position as an on-set VFX supervisor to share advice with students in New York City on how to break into the VFX industry. Head to postmagazine.com for lots more, including Linda Romanello's piece on how Company 3 color graded the latest Zombieland and Terminator films, and my exclusive conver- sation with legendary metal drummer Dave Lombardo, who just scored his first film, the documentary Los Ultimos Frikis. raditionally, in our end-of-year issue, Post magazine features contributed Outlook articles and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) topics from industry professionals who address various aspects of the post community. Beginning on page 16, we have articles from Cut + Run, Laundry, Epic Games, Foundry, FirstCom, MTI and lots more, both here and online, taking on a range of topics from visual effects and animation to branded con- tent, storage and production sound. It's a chance for creatives to share their thoughts on where the post industry is now, as well as where we're going in the year ahead. As Oscar season also heats up, we share our predictions on which films are likely to get some Academy recognition (see "Oscar Buzz", beginning on page 30). For instance, our cover story on the anticipated new film from director Sam Mendes, 1917, is a World War I drama set around two soldiers racing to deliver a message to troops behind enemy lines, to prevent them from walking into a deadly trap. We speak with Oscar-winning DP Roger Deakins on the innovative way in which the film was shot, in realtime, immersing audiences in the action. We also look at other strong Oscar contenders, including Joker, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, Terminator: Dark Fate, Ford V Ferrari and Little Women, in which Iain Blair speaks with director Greta Gerwig on her update of the classic tale. Throughout the year, Post also covered films sure to get some Oscar attention, including Disney's Frozen 2, with a blockbuster opening weekend of $350M worldwide, Paramount Pictures' RocketMan, Disney's Lion King and Marvel's Avengers: Endgame. Before signing off, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge those who have supported Post throughout the year. Many thanks for your support and allowing Post magazine, newsletters, Website, Post TV and our annual Post Anniverary party in NY (see page 6 for this year's highlights) to continue, so that we can continue to bring the post community together. Cheers to all during this holiday season and to looking toward a succesful year ahead!
