66 • THEARTISAN WINTER 2020 B Y M A R I E L A R K I N D E P A R T M E N T H E A D H A I R All photos by Mary Cybulski/Focus Features DARK WATERS IS A STORY ABOUT A REALLIFE HERO Attorney Rob Bilott takes on DuPont chemical company, that for decades, dumped toxic chemicals into the air and water of a small town in West Virginia. PFOA is a chemical that has spread all over the world and now is in everyone's blood, a contamina- tion on a global level. It's based on The New York Times article by Nathaniel Rich, "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare." The fi lm was shot in Cincinnati where Bilott actu- ally worked, and we even shot in his real-life law offi ce. My local crew consisted of key hair stylist Anna Maria Reyer and my third, Crystal Lewis, and a posse of hair stylists who we mostly pulled out of salons. The talented Anne Morgan was Anne Hathaway 's personal hair stylist. Make-up was lead by the lovely Patricia Regan (Local 798) of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fame, and her local key was Jodi Byrne. Since this was essentially a biopic, there was a plethora of his- torical photos and tapes that we used as research. Director Todd Haynes was great about sharing his research and mood boards and he wanted us to be as accurate as possible when portraying these characters. Mark Ruffalo played the attorney Rob Bilott, and Patricia and I had to work hard to play down his movie star good looks! She did everything with paint, shadowing around his eyes and pulling them down at the corners to make him look sad and tired, using Ben Nye's bruise wheel in blue and black, and a wine-colored Mac pencil around his eyes.
