20 Working Nurse l WorkingNurse.com November 18, 2019–January 13, 2020 "The resilience of my patients is an inspiration to me." Brandon Anderson, RN Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurse Extern LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER What do you particularly love about your specialty? I regularly treat children who are suffering from various forms of cancer requiring diagnosis-specific chemothera- py, as well as blood disor- ders such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia. What I love are the unique rela- tionships my special- ty allows me to build with those I care for. Since most of my patients require multiple admissions for treatment, I have the opportunity to interact with them and their families on a regular basis and get to know them on a more personal level. Please share the funniest or most moving thing that's happened to you as a nurse (bearing HIPAA in mind). My most emotional moment occurred when a 4-year-old girl I was caring for was crying because she missed her mother. All I could do to console her was to pick up and hold her while sitting on the bed in her room. We sat together for two hours that day until she eventually calmed down. As individuals, we need to be for others who we needed when we were growing up ourselves. What has being a nurse taught you? The children I treat often endure treatments that should have them in bed for weeks, but they are regularly up the following day, cheerfully pushing their little IV poles around the unit as if they were never even sick to begin with. This resilience — the ability to bounce back so quickly — is a huge inspiration for me both personally and pro- fessionally. MEN IN NURSING 2019 "I am able to apply my nursing knowledge through my passion for technology." Joel Arangorin, RN, BSN, PHN RN Clinical Informaticist METHODIST HOSPITAL OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
