28 • LMGI COMPASS | Fall 2019 MUST-SEE PLACE: It is very diffi cult to choose just one place, but looking at Łód´z history, I would recommend Central Museum of Textiles. Located in the fi rst indus- trial building erected in Łód´z, the mu- seum displays 19th-century machine- ry, fabric and handicrafts linked to the trade. In the gardens, you will be able to see how the town evolved throughout the 19th century by exploring wooden houses and workshops of fi rst immi- grants to the Promised Land. After that, you can have a rest in the nearby park and enjoy one of the most beautiful views in Łód´z—an amazing monument of our history, which is the post-indus- trial Łódz architecture. FAVORITE SHOP: Book sie Rodzi, the secondhand bookshop which also sells vinyl. Open seven days a week and located on the main street called Piotrkowska, a walking distance from my fl at, gives me everything I need: a walk, good books and great music. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Piotrkowska Street is one of the longest market streets in Europe. Within 5 km length, there are countless numbers of restaurants and pubs, so I'm not able to choose a favorite one. It depends on the mood, but no matter how I feel, I can always be sure I fi nd a great place to eat. PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: Manufaktura, located in the central part of the city, in the former industrial complex founded by Izrael Pozna´nski. Today, it's an arts centre with one of the oldest museums of modern art in the world. A shopping mall and entertainment complex. A major tourist asset to the city, with the largest public square in Łód´z, a beach in summer and an ice skating rink in winter. In September, you have the chance to see the Light Move Festival which changes the whole city centre into the magic world with "the alive buildings." BEST DAY TRIP: To answer that question, I have created a one-day trip, "Follow the Łódz's Oscars." It starts at The National Film School, the leading Polish academy for future actors, directors, photographers, cinematographers and TV stuff. It was there that Roman Polanski made his fi rst student fi lm. It is located across the street from the Museum of Cinematography, where Ewa Puszczy´nska's Oscar for Ida was displayed. From there, we go to EC1, which will soon become the home for Se-ma-for Studio, the animations studio which is responsible for Zbigniew Rybczynski's Tango and Suzi Templeton and Marek Skrobecki's Peter and the Wolf (Oscar for the Best Animated Short Film in 1982 and 2008, respectively). Then, a walk through the locations for Cold War by Paweł Pawlikowski. We fi nish the tour at the Museum of the City of Łód´z, where you can see Arthur Rubinstein's Oscar. Rubinstein was awarded an honorable Oscar for his role in the French documentary entitled L'amour de la vie by Francois Reichenbach and Bernard Chevry. It's the only Oscar ever to be awarded for acting in a documentary. FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: City centre because I have everything I need there, starting with cinemas, bookstores, cafes, parks and much more. It's also a popular fi lming loca- tion. FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: Andrzej Sapkowski, the author best known for his book series The Witcher, which was translated into 20 languages. On the basis of those books, the Polish company CD Project created one of the bestselling games worldwide, and now Netfl ix is shooting a series, starring Henry Cavill. BEST BAR/CLUB: Bar Anna, close to the main street but known only by locals and insiders. Opened in 1912, it looks like time there stopped somewhere around the 1960s. Full of colorful customers and staff. BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: Wytwórnia, the former Feature Films Studio (the fi rst one in Poland after World War II), from 2008 has been home for fi lm production companies and the stage for the most infl uential music artists. It's known for astonishing atmosphere and excellent lineup. If you're into live music, this is the place you need to visit for sure in Łód´z. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: For me, it is the view from my fl at. First, because it is beautiful and I can see the park and the roofs of the city centre tenements but mainly because I know I'm home. And by home I mean the town I really like and the fl at too, which for everyone who spends lots of days in the hotels, it is something irreplaceable. Michal's Private Tour Photo by Lori Balton/LMGI
