As the Autumnal season is here, we celebrate with Fall festivals and harvest rituals — carving pumpkins, collecting red and golden leaves, sipping warm caramel lattes, and filling cornucopias of abundance. How do you acknowledge this wonderful, mystical time of year? This issue, we asked a few of our talented writers to share a special memory from Halloween or Thanksgiving in the past. Enjoy their responses below: My dearest Fall memory was the many years of creating leaf collages between two pieces of clear contact paper with a construction paper frame with my four young children. Between the hours combing the streets for fallen wonders and hanging the collages in all our windows, the light streaming through the leaves sent color throughout the house, enriching the afternoon hues. Making the fallen leaves into art truly celebrated the season. Wendy Strgar (Pg. 12) I was married on Halloween in 1999 (the room was free!), so Fall has special meaning for me. This year, coming after last November's Woolsey Fire, I am especially grateful for my wife. She researched how to hook up to a fire hydrant on YouTube the night before the blaze, which ended up saving our home. Robert Kerbeck (Pg. 8) Halloween is a favorite holiday where we acknowledge the darker things of life. We play in the unseen realms where ghosts and goblins dwell and can anticipate a deeper connection to our own inner realms. November 1 is a high vibration day — 111. These two days are times when we can travel between other dimensions with ease. A portal is unlocked. Be open to something mysterious and interesting popping up for you! Leslie McGuirk (Pg. 16) Birgitta Kastenbaum (Pg. 18) Growing up in Holland, I never celebrated Halloween. On our first time trick-or-treating, I made a costume for our toddler son by gluing leaves to a pair of green pajamas and adding a crown made of leaves. His little face covered with dirt, we proudly headed out. We passed superheroes, ninjas, and firefighters … and received stares. No one had seen a forest elf for Halloween before and no one has ever seen one since! Greetings Dearest Readers! ~ The Autumnal Harvest is upon us and although the changes are a bit more subtle in our beautiful city of angels, you can still sense a shift in the air, a cooler breeze, a crunchy leaf or two as you walk down our city streets. The hues of light dance, sunsets seem even more vibrant, and the cool night skies envelop us in Fall's embrace. Autumn means pumpkin lattes, Halloween treats, and feasts of Thanksgiving. We welcome you to our "Celebration of Food and Wine" issue. In our pages you can read stories of rituals – around food, with rites, and the importance of taking a moment to acknowledge the moments. Life is fleeting – as we know … and it seems like the years go by faster. So we invite you to please take a moment and enjoy our publication as you reflect on the quieter times, the darker nights. In this issue, numerous articles talk about the importance of rituals – mindful practices and traditions in which we take pause. Stories included illustrate how we can all make powerful changes for our well-being that enhance the health of the planet as well. Simple choices.
