AS SOCI AT ION G OV ER NA NCE REGION 1 DIRECTOR Dan Ireland I would like to continue represent the members of region 1 on the AEA-BOD. In my first term I learned much on what AEA can offer my region, and what ideas my region can give to AEA. I have worked hard with other Southern Arizona leaders in these changing times, and continue to work collaboratively to help our members and our students. We must continue to make progress and work to create a culture of organizing. I am honored to represent Region 1, and humbly ask for your support to continue to do so. Arizona unions have been in trouble for some time, but we don't seem to be getting the political traction needed to counter a one-sided and counter-productive messaging system that sets us as rivals at the expense of our greater good. Our best tools comes from our ideas and our ability to provide information. To often, our peers have decided to forgo the community that is our national, state and local associations. The argument against us is money for dues, political exclusion and the odd idea that we are the problem and not the solution. I seek the office of Regional Representative to the AEA Board of Directors simply because more must be done. Not by one, but by many. This requires new ideas and the communication of those ideas. It requires that our members know more about what is going on in our state then their nonmember counterparts. It requires that our teaching profession is held in high esteem by more than those who wish to curry favor, but by those willing to support, contribute and vote for public education. I believe that I have the skill set to communicate the needs of my region to the AEA and the ideals of the AEA to my region. Above all, I believe that I have the skill set to communicate to the general public and our non-member colleagues that the value of joining into the shared values our community is vital to this American experiment.
