I even had some wonderful hand draftsmen! I knew from the beginning I would need a dedicated unit just to deal with all things plane-related. Their responsibilities would include tracking all the looks of the B-25s over the course of the film. There were only two B-25s to stand in for a squadron of eighty. (The Nichols' film had seventeen to play with!) The Art Directors of the planes identified the correct colors and markings for all the aircraft and detailed the creation of the interior aircraft sets to be shot on stage. They also sourced all the pieces needed to create the look of an aftermath as Germans bomb what is meant to be twenty planes in a nighttime raid. Another aspect of the planes' design was creating a "library" of nose art to be used both practically on the planes, as well as by the visual effects team in post-production. All of this was aided by the expertise of the aerial coordinators, G F as well as the flight and ground crews that accompanied each working aircraft. In addition, we had a technical crew from the UK that was responsible for physically assembling the interior of the B-25 stage sets. Location work included the city of Viterbo, standing in for Rome and various other places, and Sutri, standing in for Palermo and Bologna. Villa Parisi, just outside of Rome, served as a satellite backlot, providing a multitude of interior and exterior looks, including a place to reconstruct the USAAF base hospital ward and mortuary. The city of Procoio provided a tree and field in which to find Yossarian hanging from his parachute as well as a "small Italian village." The interior and exterior Palace of Oran was shot in Rome at Forlanini, a fascist era hospital built by Mussolini. Exterior Santa Ana, CA, was shot in Sardinia, while the interiors were a combination of studio sets for the barracks and motel room, with other location work at the same hospital. But it was the old, decommissioned municipal airport in Olbia, Sardinia, that became the production's home for ten weeks of preproduction and six weeks D. THE BRIEFING ROOM. SET PHOTO. E.
