time and money to improve the 'aina'
that others just walk by complaining
about or ignore. I love how we always
leave a location better than how we
find it.
Stevie: WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE
WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF
OR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN THIS
PROFESSION?
RS: Work hard, be honest and be open
to learning something new every day
and be willing to adapt ... and don't
let all the constant changes drive
you crazy. Do what needs to be done
… our "glamorous" career has a lot
of non-glamorous aspects to it. As
location managers, we have all picked
up cigarette butts in the wee hours
of the morning because it needed to
be done and we were the only ones
around to do it! Our jobs require us
to deal with all sorts of people—from
millionaires to the homeless. Treat
every person you deal with equally
with respect and you won't go wrong.
Stevie: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN
THE LMGI & HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A
MEMBER?
RS: I joined the LMGI in 2010. I was
isolated in Hawaii doing my job in
the early years, trying to keep costs
down, helping set standards and
create permit systems, and helping
locations and government adapt to
the film world for so many years.
When I learned about the Guild from
member Ilt Jones, I had to join.
Having done only one job (locations)
in almost 50 years of production, it
only made sense. What a joy to meet
so many professional, knowledgeable,
good people doing my job all over the
world! From Michael Lewis (whose
dad produced The Karate Kid in
Hawaii, when Michael was a little
clean-shaven tyke), to Laura Sode-
Matteson, LMGI (who grew up in
Hawaii), to Ilt Jones (one of the few
people I've met taller than me!),
to Mike Fantasia, LMGI (another
country-living lover), and so many
others who have come to work in
Hawaii, my ALOHA to you all for
being good people and hard workers,
leaving good feelings and knowledge
in Hawaii!
