www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY/JUNE 2019 C M Y CM MY CY CMY K EDITOR'S NOTE his issue kicks off our Summer Movies coverage (page 18), and there's quite an assort- ment of entertainment out there to choose from, be it music (Aladdin, Rocket Man) or effects-driven releases (Avengers: Endgame, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters). Week by week I am checking off my list of 'must-see' movies, but I admit, as a child of the '70s, I couldn't wait to see the latest Godzilla film, which was released by Warner Bros. on May 31 st . I remember watching the 'monsterverse' films of the '60s on Sunday afternoons with my brothers, and eagerly anticipating the destruction Godzilla and his foes would unleash, as well as his iconic roar. Visual effects have certainly come a long way since the days of miniature sets and men in rubber suits, who demolished Tokyo one step at a time. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters pushes the capabilities of what visual effects pros can pro- duce, and my conversation with the film's VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron reveals why this film was so challenging. In a word: scale! Everything is huge when dealing with these mythical titans, so the contributing VFX houses — MPC, Dneg, Method Studios and Rodeo FX — all had their hands full in bringing Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah to the big screen. See page 26 for details. Brightburn is another recent sci-fi release, but was produced on a much smaller budget — less than $7 million, according to director David Yarovesky. I had a chance to speak with the di- rector the week the film debuted (May 24 th ), and he revealed how his work on past low-budget releases, such as 2014's The Hive, prepared him for his latest challenge, which takes an anti-su- perhero look at a powerful individual who's "not here to save to world." Head to postmagazine. com for my full interview. Our Website has lots of content that you won't find in our print pages, including a number of career profiles that we've been putting together each month. Editor Nena Erb, ACE, for example, recently shared insight into her work on the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and HBO's Insecure, as well as advice for those looking at a career in post production. See what she had to say. rozen's Olaf may sing his heart out about the anticipation of summer and all the wonder- ful things that the season brings, but surely movie audiences can share a similar senti- ment, looking forward to some exciting, funny, smart, dramatic and overall entertaining offerings from studios. Post's May/June issue looks at just that, with several features on the outstanding work from post professionals on some big box-office draws. We dive right in with our cover story, on page 22, on the audio post team behind Rocketman and how they brought Elton John's biggest hits to a new generation in Paramount Pictures' musical fantasy. According to Mike Prestwood Smith, re-recording mixer on the film, "The music was the driving factor and often the narrative." Read about the unique way the score is inter- twined with the musical performances to create a seamless flow for audiences in and out of fantasy sequences. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, too, will be stomping its way for a top spot at the box office. As Post's Marc Loftus reports, "Godzilla has come a long way from the heavy rubber suits used in the productions of the 1960s." His interview (page 26) with the film's VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron, discusses some of the VFX thrills studios MPC, Dneg, Method Studios and Rodeo FX are giving audiences this summer. Of course, we couldn't offer a summer movie report without covering the year's biggest suc- cess thus far (and scorching its way toward top-grossing film of all time). In her feature, Karen Moltenbrey, chief editor of sister publication, CGW, speaks with the VFX team behind Avengers: Endgame (page 18) about the film's nearly 2,500 VFX shots and the 13 contributing vendors. The section wraps with a sample of my recent online interview with Aladdin DP Alan Stewart (page 31) who discusses the unique challenges of shooting musicals and creating a live-action version of a Disney classic.
