Derek S. Drake RN, DNP, NE-BC, CNML, CNL Chief Nursing Officer St. Francis Medical Center – Verity Health System I maintain membership in sev- eral professional organiza- tions, subscribe to multiple professional journals and publications and am an active participant in various social media platforms. However, I don't think there are any platforms more valu- able than regular attendance at professional conferences and meetings. I make it a goal to attend at least one national conference or meeting each year. I always return to work refreshed and energized, ready to put what I learned into practice. Robyn M. Nelson RN, Ph.D., MSN Dean, College of Nursing West Coast University Professional organizations are essential: the Association of California Nurse Leaders, the ANA and for me the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Their email blasts, webinars and urgent alerts are my eyes, ears and "pokes." I have a dis- tribution list program to share this information with all my faculty. Jinhee Nguyen RN, MSN Patient Care Executive, Hospital Administration Adventist Health Glendale I do my best to stay updated on healthcare issues, technol- ogy and nursing management, particularly nursing labor mar- ket trends. I often start my day by speed-reading all of these issues. To get the pulse of what's happening in the nurse executive world, I check out the feed from AONE (American Organization of Nurse Executives). For health- care industry news, Becker's Hospital Review and Advisory Board are a couple of good sources I read. Robert Mayberry, RN, MPH, CFRN, EMT-P Director of Clinical Standards PHI Air Medical On the clinical side, I keep up to date with traditional refer- ence materials and NEJM Journal Watch. On the lead- ership side, I read mainstream business literature from Harvard Business Review and a few medical business newsletters. Lately, I find myself reading up on eco- nomics, cognitive psychology and education to help me fill some knowledge gaps. Sherry Nolfe RN, MSN Chief Nursing Officer Loma Linda University Children's Hospital I am a social learner and love to interact face-to-face. I love networking, so I enjoy going to conferences to learn. I also enjoy talking with the staff nurses, nurse educators and clinical nurse specialists to see what they are learning and try to soak in their knowl- edge. I also love listening to podcasts and TED Talks. Gloria Sanchez-Rico RN, BSN, MBA, NEA-BC Sr. Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Huntington Hospital Last year, I had the opportu- nity to listen to Cy Wakeman speak at the Magnet confer- ence. Ever since, I have fol- lowed her and have shared her books and podcasts with colleagues. I love her take on reality-based leadership. Simon Sinek also offers great perspective on leadership. Lauren Spilsbury RN, MSN Vice President, Patient Care Services Redlands Community Hospital I have several online newslet- ters that are delivered to my email daily or weekly, includ- ing ones from Modern Healthcare, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the American Hospital Association, the California Hospital Association and Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC). I participate in several CNO listserves, which provide use- ful insights from other nurs- ing leaders. Additionally, I participate in webinars (I enjoy watching them while in the bathtub — I learn and soak at the same time) and am actively involved in professional nurs- ing organizations such as the Association of California Nurse Leaders and the HASC Nursing Advisory Council. I attend at least one annual leadership conference each year and I read voraciously. Veena Vangari RN, BSN, MBA, M.A., PGDHM, CRRN, HACP Chief Nursing Officer California Rehabilitation Institute A Cedars/UCLA Health Partnership I check agency websites for current state regulations and the websites for the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, California Hospital Association and Healthcare Financial Management Association for developments in nursing, healthcare and regulations. Being on the dis- tribution lists for the local chapters helps me stay abreast of policy, process and updates. Networking with local healthcare partners about how certain regulations are operationalized in the area is also very helpful.
