Social Studies Resources and Lessons from UA The University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) has some great free resources for K-14 teachers. Check out the lessons – over 80 of them – on their website at cmes. arizona.edu/outreach/lessons. At the top of the page, you will find links to an index by grade level, content area, or subject/country. Recently added is a new one for high school/college instructors: "Contagion, Quarantines, and Cures in History: Case Study – the Ottoman Empire." It uses a read-aloud script to introduce topics in medical history – and has the students analyze short primary source documents/visual images – all in only 2 class periods. In addition, there are teachers' resources for teachers to use in their own preparation or which they can photocopy and hand out to high school students at cmes.arizona.edu/ node/771. There are resource lists such as an annotated bibliography of Middle East-themed youth literature by grade level and type of book and, for high school world history teachers, a long list of online materials, organized by AP themes at cmes.arizona.edu/outreach/resources.
