I ornate mismatched door knobs. I'll share a happy accident…the paint buckled and warped the wall surface in a random and unexpected way, which in the end, only added to the bizarre look of the space. I love the experimental nature of designing scenery, to be always learning and discovering. Episode six travels back to season one of AHS's "Murder House." The majority of this episode was shot on location, in the original house from season one. There was extremely limited prep time with lead actress Sarah Paulson directing (for the first time), so the crew had to break out their A-game. Ryan Watson and his team did a great job dressing the entire mansion to match the original. Graphic Designer Simon Jones designed some beautiful stained-glass windows. This was just one example of his many outstanding creations throughout the season. As in season one, the kitchen and porch of the murder house had to be built, and once again, thanks to archives, the previous Art Department and Amina Cruz, the original drawings were found and the original kitchen was recreated. The remaining four episodes proved to be no less challenging. Some of the sets created included a stylized 1972 house paying homage to the original Tales from the Crypt movie, starring Joan Collins, who would also be starring in this version. Just before the evil Santa goes to kill the star, the camera pulls back and to reveal it is all on a soundstage. An iconic setting was also needed for a witch burning. After adding some architectural elements, the Sepulveda Dam worked well for this. Another distinct look needed was the Kineros Headquarters. After an exhaustive search, a stunning location was found in Irvine that played as the exterior high-tech campus. For the interior office and Venables's office, a white warehouse in Sun Valley was built out. Interchangeable rolling set pieces were used that could be reconfigured to play as different environments within the location. F E G H A. ROBICHAUX DINING ROOM. PRODUCTION STILL. B.
