The exterior was matched by a series of stage builds for the interior —necessary to allow for an early melee between a renegade Atlantean queen and a number of Atlantean soldiers—as well as a partial build of the observation deck situated just below the lantern housing at the height of the tower. The idea an older, romanticized world was also applied to the Italian village set, which served as the stage for an all-out brawl between Arthur, Mera, a host of Atlantean soldiers and iconic comic book baddie Black Manta. Starting with a brief scout of Erchie, Sicily, Art Director Desma Murphy took point on what would ultimately become the largest practical set in the film. Following Wan's desire to balance the action with moments of humor and levity, Murphy created a multilevel playing field to accommodate both. Starting in the ruins of an old Roman temple set high above the city, the standoff devolves into a high-speed chase across rooftops as Atlantean soldiers pursue Amber Heard's Mera. To complement this action, an extended run of interiors were built, providing a number of different spaces and obstacles for the Atlanteans to crash through. Their pursuit is ended when Mera falls through the roof of a wine shop, which opens out onto a sprawling piazza where Arthur and Black Manta exchange blows. Initially shown as a bustling market, set decorator Beverly Dunn provided plenty of good playing areas in which the ensuing havoc could be wreaked. Notable casualties included an outdoor café, a beautifully sculpted fountain and the central fixture of an exploded bell tower. Constructed in pieces across the Australian backlot, the final edit brings all of these disparate elements together into one seamless sequence. D. LIGHTHOUSE.CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION BY SCOTT LUKOWSKI.
