www.postmagazine.com 2 POST NOVEMBER 2018 EDITOR'S NOTE ost recently celebrated its 33rd year with our annual party in New York City. The day be- gan with a dozen interviews, live streamed from the show floor of NAB Show New York, and culminated with a party at Stitch, just a few blocks away from the Jacob Javits Center. You can see some of the photos on page 6 and visit our Website for dozens more, along with video interviews with reps from Audionamix, Firstcom, Alt Systems, Maxon, Facilis and many more. We have exciting plans to deliver more of this type of content in 2019, and will share details in this space next month. This month, we've got lots of film coverage, including Iain Blair's and Linda Romanello's interviews with the team behind the hugely popular film, A Star Is Born. Our coverage continues online with an extended conversation with editor Jay Cassidy. I had a chance to speak with the mixing team behind Universal Pictures' recent release, First Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. Mixers Jon Taylor and Frank Montano took time out to detail their work on the film's soundtrack, which is 'grounded' in the 1960s. The soundtrack features authentic elements from original transmissions between the Apollo team and the con- trol tower in Houston. The Atmos soundtrack has a mono-esque quality that expands consider- ably when reflecting the intensity experienced by astronauts during NASA launches. Also online, we invite you to check out a career profile on Emmy-winning sound design- er Kenneth L. Johnson. Johnson, who has well over 100 credits, grew up in South Central LA amidst gangs, drugs and violence. Against tough odds, he escaped this environment to flourish and ultimately establish his own business. His story is one of inspiration and definite- ly worth a read. Other online highlights include an interview with Goosebumps 2 composer Dominic Lewis, and details on the production and post of the queer, comedic Web series, Blank My Life, which just launched Season 3. There's plenty to see, so head over to postmagazine.com. his month's issue of Post is jam-packed with goodies, like when a kid hits the candy jackpot on Halloween. So, let's dive right in with a look at our annual Post party (page 6), celebrating the publication's 33 rd anniversary, held during the growing 2018 NAB NY con- ference. We had a lot of support from the industry this year. I'd like to personally thank our party sponsors Alt Systems, Firstcom Music and Audionamix, as well as Hype, Raz PR, D. Pagan Communications, Press Kitchen, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and TwoPoint0 for sponsoring our par- ty favors and special thanks to ArtisansPR and Firstcom Music for sponsoring our raffle prizes. Post also had a strong presence on the show floor, streaming live video interviews with ex- hibitors and post pros to our Facebook page. Visit us there, and on our Website, for extended coverage of our party, as well as the NAB Show! Looking ahead to Oscar season, we spotlight several films we think have some real potential for pulling out some nominations. Beginning on page 8, we look at some outstanding work in directing, animation, visual effects, shooting, editing and sound. But we didn't stop there. We also have full features on a number of new films, including Bad Times at the El Royale (page 10), A Star is Born (page 12), Bohemian Rhapsody (page 18) and Ralph Breaks the Internet (page 34) — any of which could rack up some Oscar nods. We continue our Editors' Roundtable discussion (page 22) from last month, featuring a number of outstanding female editors discussing the post industry, and look at advancements in sound and picture restoration for some cult and Hollywood classics in our feature on page 28. Expect even more film coverage next month with The Nutcracker, Grinch, Fantastic Beasts and a cover story on Mary Poppins Returns, along with our annual Outlook issue that brings the voices of the industry directly to you!
