Gavin (In Memoriam, Spring 2018). Some in Mexico, notably the Mexican press, were critical of "Jack" Gavin, a "mere actor," when he was nominated as U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Gavin's mother was Mexican, his father Chilean. Gavin was fluent in Spanish and had studied international relations at Stanford. Ambassador Gavin regularly "took stage" dealing with the press in Spanish and English, and dazzled Mexican and international guests when he and his wife, Constance Towers, a noted actress, hosted events at their residence. Gavin was well informed on substantive issues, had excellent relations with the Mexican government and the business sector, and was in close personal and professional contact with President Reagan. Ambassador Gavin was a strong and effective representative of the United States.
