www.postmagazine.com 2 POST OCTOBER 2018 EDITOR'S NOTE ost runs its annual "Music Video" feature each August, but our coverage of the genre is ongoing. Recently, I came across the inspiring story of J.T. Ibanez, an Iraqi War veteran who is using filmmaking, and in this case a new music video for SoCal band P.O.D., to help deal with his post traumatic stress disorder. Ibanez (IG: @jt_ibanez) first met the band more than 22 years ago, when he was working as a concert promoter. He helped bring P.O.D. to the St. Louis market a half-dozen times over the years, and has stayed in touch with them since. For Ibanez, P.O.D.'s music is personal. He is an Iraq War veteran who spent much of 2003 in Baghdad, living in an abandoned school and coming under attack daily. In between the chaos, his team was able to set up a satellite and watch TV on occasion. "I remember sitting there in the 100-degree heat, watching the latest video from P.O.D.," he recalls. "It was from the Matrix soundtrack, a song called 'Sleeping Awake.' It seemed to come on every 10 minutes on whatever channel we had, and I was OK with that. There was comfort in seeing them and in those moments, it helped me escape my reality." Fast forward to 2018 and Ibanez connected with the band to direct, shoot and edit their Rockin' With The Best video, which is the initial track off their "Circles" album, set for release on November 16th. You can visit our Website, postmagazine.com, to watch the video and learn all about its incredibly quick turn around, which included shooting with Red's Scarlet camera and editing in Final Cut Pro. Ibanez was able to put the whole thing together in just a few days and with an extremely-modest budget. His hard work paid off, however, as Rockin' With The Best garnered over 200,000 views in just its first month on YouTube. recently had a chance to speak with a number of highly intelligent, creative and talent- ed editors who all worked in different areas of the media and entertainment industry — some in television, some in film, others in commercials/ads, special projects and/or music videos. They discussed what some of their biggest challenges were working in this field, talked about some of the latest tools and technologies they rely on and went into detail about some of their latest projects. While their stories differ in so many ways, the one thing they have in com- mon is that they are all women — working in a male-dominated field. While my headline seems to poke fun at the topic, it's really intended to grab attention for something that, too many times, is not a laughing matter. We spoke with six editors working at various post production studios, or as freelanc- ers, within the media & entertainment market and asked them to participate in our special Editors' Roundtable. The responses from each editor who participated were well thought-out, insightful and inter- esting — so much so, that the article turned into a two-part series, running in this month's issue of Post, as well as next month in November. Here, we share thoughts from Lucky Post's Elizabeth V. Moore, Marvel Studios' Debbie Berman and Bandit's Heather Danosky, who's response of "hire more women," to address how the post community can help women advance in the industry was so simple yet on point, we had to share. They also addressed current trends and industry expectations — "We're living in a time of a lot of distractions and people have shorter attention spans than ever, so it has become an even bigger challenge to hook people and actually leave a lasting impression," says Elizabeth Moore — as well as compared editing tools — "I've worked on a multitude of systems, but Avid is the only one that currently can adequately handle the demands of a multi-crew project with mass media management successfully," says Debbie Berman. For more on the topic, see Part 1 of our Editors' Roundtable, beginning on page 20, and visit us again next month to hear from independent editor Kathryn Himoff, Uppercut's Danielle Sclafani and Bandit's Robin Burchill.
