And when you are in the market for a new car, consider buying a hybrid vehicle. WATER: Conserve! Plastic water bottles are expensive to make, pollute our oceans and landfills, harm animals, and leach plastic molecules into the water they contain. One answer: stainless steel canteens. Another answer is to install a water purification system in your kitchen. But a quick and easy way to purify tap water in the home is to use a Britta pitcher. Conserve! Whenever possible, wash clothes and dishes in full loads and with cold water. In colder states it is unheard of to have an outside water heater, but here it is widely practiced. Reduce the heating bill by insulating your water tank and the pipes that channel heated water to the faucets. Solar thermal is another great way to sustainably heat water. Akin to solar electric, solar thermal panels, generally installed on the rooftop, heat up the water that flows to faucets. Only we can create a sustainable future. It is time to start.
