Counseling Services Your union and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation have teamed up with The Actors Fund to provide confidential, supportive services for SAG-AFTRA members impacted by workplace sexual harassment. This includes assessments, crisis and short-term supportive counseling, education on individual rights and legal avenues, referrals to related resources and, when needed, referrals for other clinical services. For information on how to contact The Actors Fund, see box at right. In addition, SAG-AFTRA has established enhanced risk assessment and trauma counseling so that credentialed professionals will be on hand 24/7. These clinicians will also offer referrals to external resources and can follow up with callers who choose to give their contact information. Guideline No. 1 Following the Code of Conduct, on April 12, the union issued its first guideline, calling for a ban to holding auditions in hotel rooms and private residences. "We call on producers and other decision-makers with influence or control over decisions that can impact a career, to stop holding professional meetings in these high-risk locations and find alternative, appropriate locations for professional meetings. Furthermore, we call on SAG-AFTRA members and their representatives to stop agreeing to professional meetings in these high-risk locations," the guideline read in part. Since the guideline was issued, similar provisions have been incorporated into the proposed Network Television Code contract on which members will be voting (see story on page 18). The guideline garnered much attention by the media and was well received by members and the industry, including Anita Hill, who leads the industrywide Commission on Eliminating Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace. Hill said, "The Commission applauds SAG-AFTRA's recently issued Guideline No. 1. The implementation of this guideline marks an important first step in communicating appropriate industry standards for professional practices. This is exactly the kind of action the Commission encourages as part of our ongoing effort to introduce systemic changes that create safer, fairer and more equitable workspaces throughout the industry. We call on other stakeholders to support SAG-AFTRA's effort and encourage them to adopt similar guidelines within their own institutions."
