Plummer to form Zeus, which launched as a video-on-demand platform in July. "To be working with SAG-AFTRA, it's a huge opportunity," said Plummer, whose TV credits include Preachers of Detroit. "It's a chance to be looked at as a credible network." SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White said that the creators are turning to SAG-AFTRA for help ensuring their economic rights are protected. "We see ourselves as a platform for not only protecting people but also for nurturing this type of programming," White told the creators during the SAG-AFTRA sponsored Social Media Week panel. "SAG-AFTRA is a home for creators; it's a home for performers." SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris believes that digital content creators partnering with SAG-AFTRA was a natural next step. "They're continuing to push the boundaries of entertainment production and distribution, and we'll be there to ensure they have the protections and benefits they need." Beyond the Social Media Week panel, SAG-AFTRA also got the word out about the new contract by sponsoring a VIP lounge during VidCon, the conference that brings YouTube creators and fans together each year in Anaheim, California. Also, on July 10, SAG-AFTRA hosted a reception in Hollywood to celebrate content creators and showcase the union's relationship with Zeus. How to Produce with the New Short Project Agreement Producers who want to work with the new Short Project Agreement can find the contract on sagaftra.org under Contracts & Industry Resources. The agreement is designed to be flexible and give producers more options for how their project is released. Salaries are fully negotiable under the Short Project Agreement. The terms of payment, such as the option to defer such payment, may be negotiated in good faith between producers and performers. Once the parties agree on pay, conditions must be set forth in a personal services agreement or a written voucher form, as applicable. Members who put on their producer hat and opt for the deferred payment option should note that if they exhibit their production outside of the original market, they could trigger residuals and deferred payments. Always check with SAG- AFTRA if you're not sure. The agreement covers projects with a maximum budget of $50,000 and a run time of up to 40 minutes with the exception of a new media series. The principal shooting schedule cannot exceed 30 days and must take place solely in the United States. The projects can be screened at film festivals, on free-to-the- consumer digital platforms such as YouTube and on public access television. If the producer wants to release the project in a different medium, such as an SVOD platform, SAG-AFTRA must be notified first and additional compensation could be due for the performers. This agreement also covers non-airing projects, including sizzle reels or other projects that were covered under the Demo Reel Agreement. For more information on the Short Project Agreement, please contact the TV/Theatrical Department at (323) 549-6828.
