band-aids have been applied, but Ron is entering a physical world that needs drastic change if it is to continue to stand. Suddenly, we aren't talking about architecture anymore. The interior of the Colorado Springs Police Department was to be the big build for the show. New York is rich with locations for a lot of different periods and types of buildings, but amazingly, the one thing it lacks are shootable police precincts. This is because New York is still very much a procedural show town. At any given moment, there are a dozen productions looking for or using a precinct. By the page count, it was clear the production would need to build its own. The result was an office set lit entirely with practical fixtures, that allowed the company to move freely and quickly from one office to another. And when I say quickly, I mean up to twelve pages a day quickly! Spike works fast. Spike is decisive, knows when he has the right take, rarely reshoots and is editing in his head. This means the Art Department has to be nimble and expect that work will be moving up on a regular basis. Sets therefore, have to be ready well in advance of their initially scheduled shoot date in order to keep up with the shooting crew. His decisiveness while shooting is no different when he is looking at design ideas. On most days, conversations are transactional and succinct. When you present the idea, the reaction is immediate and irreversible. He rarely changes his mind, and you won't get a second chance to make your case. Consequently, the design has to be almost completely figured out before it is worth showing. The design development process is an internal one. And if it then doesn't fly, you have very little time to change direction. Knowing this, a lot of set was designed and built for the CSPD, and he instinctively understood how to use it to his advantage, even moving scenes to areas of the set that were only intended as additional depth.
