what this movie would mean, and how difficult the material would be. At the same time, we were learning a lot about the evil that lives next door in this country, and the legacy of hate that has persisted since this nation was born. But there was still a film to make; and Spike Lee, for all his big, timely and controversial ideas, is always working in the mode of an independent filmmaker. Because of this, he can think very practically and incisively about the process. And so it was with BlackkKlansman. This is basically what went down on our first phone call after I read the script: SPIKE Curt. What's up? What's up? So, where are we going shoot BlackkKlansman? ME In New York. It's a waste of money to shoot in Colorado. We can't afford it. We can totally get it in New York. SPIKE Are you sure? ME (Not completely sure) Absolutely. From all the research I have been looking at, it's not that complicated. A couple of well-placed VFX shots, and some second unit work in Colorado, and I think we can sell it. SPIKE Bet Click. Minutes later, Tim Stacker, part of Spike's inner circle and location manager for the project, called with a question. TIM Curt. Spike said you said we are going to do New York for Colorado Springs. How are we going to do this, Curt? ME I don't know, Tim. But do you really think we should go to Colorado Springs, one of the most conservative counties in the country, to shoot this film? TIM You're right. You're right. No brothers in Colorado Springs. ME Exactly. Let's look at small towns upstate in the zone. We go to Colorado Springs for a week of shooting, get the establishing stuff we need, and get back to Brooklyn. TIM Bet. Click.
