www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAY 2018 EDITOR'S LETTER ay marks the beginning of what we here at Post like to call 'The 'Summer Movie Season,' and as this month's Deadpool 2 cover shows, there's a lot to be excited about. Iain Blair talks with director David Leitch about taking over the reins of the successful franchise, which hit theaters May 18 th . Turn to page 18 for details. The year's biggest film so far, not surprisingly, is packed with superheroes. Avengers: Infinity War has broken all kinds of records since its release on April 27 th . In addition to being 2018's most successful film ($1.6B at press time), the feature is also the most successful superhero film of all time, and the longest Marvel movie, running approximately two hours and 30 minutes. I had a chance to talk with editor Jeffrey Ford shortly after the film's opening weekend. Ford worked with directors Anthony and Joe Russo in the past on 2016's Captain America: Civil War, as well as on 2012's The Avengers (directed by Joss Whedon), and took time out to provide insight into the editing process, which he split with frequent collaborator, Matt Schmidt. You can read some of my interview with Ford in our "Bits & Pieces" section (page 4), and the complete interview on our Website, postmagazine.com. We also have additional Avengers coverage online, including a look at the visual effects work of Framestore and Cinesite, two of the nearly dozen studios that helped bring the Marvel world to life. On June 8 th , the new Lionsgate film Hotel Artemis will hit theaters. The film stars Jodie Foster as the head nurse in an exclusive, hidden LA hospital that only treats the most accomplished criminals. I caught an advanced screening of the film weeks before its release and will be speaking with first-time director Drew Pearce about the project, which also stars Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Charlie Day and Dave Bautista. My colleague Linda Romanello is already working on coverage of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the eagerly-awaited, Ron Howard-directed film that's set for release on May 25 th . And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Definitely visit our Website for 'Summer Movies' coverage in the weeks to follow, as well as in the forthcoming issues of Post! his year's 2018 NAB Show in Las Vegas featured more than 1,700 exhibitors, with 200-plus first-timers, from all around the world showing off their technologies and solutions to the more than 93,000 industry pros who were in attendance. Each year, the show takes over the entire Las Vegas Convention Center and is filled with folks who are sharing ideas and exchanging information on the show floor, as well as in meeting rooms, nearby hotel suites and various locations around town. With that many people from the same industry, all convening in one place, surely there was lots to talk about. The VR, AR and 360-degree conversations continued, as well as the 4K-turning- into-8K conversations, with lots of talk this year surrounding AI. Storage remains an important piece of the puzzle, too, as well as talk about how to best move the data through the pipeline. And for those who are also involved on the production side, camera manufacturers are offering lots of great new features (see our feature, page 32). Post has it covered here in our after-show issue, with our Post Picks (page 12) awards, as well as our NAB Rewind feature, beginning on page 22, which looks at some of the other technologies, products and solutions from companies, both on and off the show floor. Of course, readers can find more show coverage on our Website, as well as our Post TV interviews (visit our Facebook page) that were streamed live from NAB. While NAB is now officially a wrap, it's my hope that we don't simply forget everything we saw or read about from the show. Now it's time to get serious and make these new solutions count. It's one thing to have something new to introduce at the show, but let's ship those products, get the technology into users' hands so they can help move projects forward and advance the post community and, ultimately, allow the creatives to do just that, create!
