8 • LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2018 CONTRIBUTORS Nancy Mills Nancy Mills is a freelance entertainment writer whose work has appeared in dozens of magazines and newspapers around the world, including USA Today, USA Weekend magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Us Weekly, People, Cosmopolitan, Elle, The Costco Connection, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, The Guardian, International Herald Tribune and The New York Times Syndicate. Over the years, she has visited hundreds of TV and film locations in such far-flung spots as China, India, Italy, France, Germany, England, Mexico, Australia and Fiji. She is a graduate of Cornell University. Carole Segal Born in London, Carole Segal emigrated to Los Angeles as a teenager. A late bloomer, she never considered a job in the entertainment industry until her part-time job coordinating the master calendar at Cheviot Hills Park introduced her to filming. She decided that was what she wanted to do when she grew up. The rest is history. She really loves her job and the variety of associated tasks. A 2015 COLA winner for Fresh Off the Boat Location Team of the Year, she was also nominated for House in 2009 and Fresh Off the Boat in 2016. A founding member, Carole sat on the Board for eight years, serving on the Executive Committee, Treasurer, Co-chair of Membership and various other ad hoc committees. When not working on a project, Carole loves to travel, serving as an ambassador for the LMGI. Kokayi Ampah Kokayi's career began in 1968 at the PBS affiliate in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a PA on the TV series Roots II. He was the first African- American to join the Hollywood Teamsters Local 399. He has partnered with Ruby Little, Warner Bros. Director of Labor Relations, in conducting a "Diversity in the Workplace" seminar for the DGA Trainee Program. Kokayi is a Board member of the LGMI and also a member of the DGA and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Jill Naumann Los Angeles native Jill Naumann considers filmmaking to be an integral part of her cultural heritage. Training on the streets of LA during the '90s filming boom, Naumann worked with directors such as Ron Howard, Mick Jackson and William Friedkin. In 2003, she received a COLA Award for Location Professional of the Year – Television for 44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out. In 2013, she was honored with a second COLA for the Best Reality Series Top Hooker. Her photography has been showcased in AFCI's Locations Magazine and many California country brochures distributed by tourism Boards. In her downtime, she enjoys using multi-sport vacations to scout California's small towns, and donates her time on the festival circuit to promote filming. Paul Messana Paul first became interested in location scouting while he was an undergrad at Pitzer College. He worked summer positions and took independent courses that supplemented learning about the field, including working on a thesis documentary project about location scouting in the Faroe Islands. Upon graduation, Paul worked under Joan Aguado at the South Pasadena Film Office of his hometown and through that position, he was introduced to location managers and more opportunities in the field. He has since been working as an assistant location manager and scout on This Is Us, Modern Family & LA to Vegas. His love for Los Angeles and creative eye inspire him to work on bigger projects and he can't wait for what is next. Alison A. Taylor LA born and Indianapolis raised, location manager Alison Taylor has won three California On Location Awards (COLA) for the excellence of her work as a location manager. A graduate of Purdue University, Alison spent five years as an international tour director escorting groups around the world which was great training for her 23-year career as a location professional. Her many credits include the feature films A Wrinkle in Time, The First Purge, Straight Outta Compton, Training Day, Amistad and the TV series Insecure, Snowfall, Southland, Lincoln Heights and Alias. Alison is an active member of the Board of the Location Managers Guild International and of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. In 2017, she received her 20-year pin from Hollywood Teamsters Local 399. Dyana Carmella Dyana Carmella is an LA-based journalist and creative director for Mystic Creative, as well as the producer of the YouTube show Outsider. With a passion for the outdoors, she strives on creating content to inspire others to venture outside and better their world around them. Lori Balton Grateful to have a job that lets her explore the world, Balton is the first location professional accepted into the Academy. She has been lucky to work with some of the best directors, designers and location managers in the business. Co-editor of the LMGI Compass magazine, founding member and past president of the LMGI, she is delighted to see the Guild thrive. John Rakich Toronto, Canada-based location manager John Rakich was the first location professional from that city to join the LMGI in 2015. His many credits include the feature films Resident Evil 4, Pixels and the TV series Hemlock Grove, American Gods and Shadowhunters. When not working, John enjoys exploring Canada's U.S. neighbor via road trips. Architecture and great food always factor into planning his destinations.
