56 • LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2018 LMGI President Eric Klosterman and LMGI 1st Vice President Mike Fantasia joined attendees from as far as Quebec and Ontario, interacting with BC (British Columbia) location managers, assistant location managers, fellow union representatives, vendors and municipal and region film representatives. Sharing stories from location professionals in different jurisdictions illustrates the challenges posed by increasing production volume across Canada and the United States. The industry as a whole needs to adapt measures to prevent location fatigue and burnout. The day began with a short Vancouver Fam Tour with the visiting guests. They toured popular filming locations, including the spectacular Lynn Canyon forest and W Studio in North Vancouver, Surrey City Hall (an architectural landmark), downtown New Westminister and the Vancouver Art Gallery. In the space of four hours, they saw great locations and experienced snow, rain and finally, some sunshine. The tour allowed visiting local LMs to share experiences that highlighted one of the missions of the LMGI—creating a community for location professionals. LMGI Board member and DGC BC member, location manager Matt Palmer was a great intermediary and the perfect master of ceremonies. He started the event off with a warm welcome, introducing both Guilds and the panel themes. He then introduced Sandi Richter Cooper, the BC Film Commissioner and keynote speaker. The first panel, "War Stories—When the Worst Happens," was moderated by Kendrie Upton, Executive Director of DGC BC. LMGI panelists Mike Fantasia & Eric Klosterman, and LMGI members Rino Pace, Desiree Young from DGC BC, and Luis Mendoza from DGC Ontario did a great job entertaining and VANCOUVER Location Sustainability On February 17, the LMGI and industry partner the Directors Guild Canada BC (DGC BC) kicked off the first-ever partnership event between the LMGI and the DGC BC.
