54 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2018 THE DISASTER ARTIST was a labor of love for many people, much in the same way that the film it documented, The Room, was a labor of love for Tommy Wiseau. James Franco came upon the property four years ago, and began discussing it with his personal make-up artist Nana Fischer. Nana, who had been with James for eight years on a variety of projects, watched the film and discussed with James what it would take to make him look like Tommy, who has an extremely distinctive facial structure and hair style. They agreed that there would need to be some prosthetics involved. I came to the project through a refer- ral from my good friend Howard Berger, and met with the producers having done some Photoshop render- ings of James as Tommy. I was hired to generate a test make-up based on these, and consulted with Nana via email, phone and Skype. While I was putting together the pieces, Nana was having a wig made by Peter Owen in the UK. Cleverly, she had it dyed an unnatural black, rather than using naturally black hair, which really added to Tommy's artifice.
