7 Great ings Happen Everyday GREA Honors Request of Veteran Joe Clingenpeel, Southwest Region UniServ Director, jclingenpeel@wyoea.org Each year Monroe Intermediate School (MIS) in Sweetwater County School District #2 (Green River) hosts a Veteran's Day Program to show their appreciation and gratitude for those who are serving and have served our country and contributed to our freedom. MIS has always been very active in the support of our veterans and our active duty military members. In addition to organizing the annual Veteran's Day Program, they also make hundreds of cards each year to send to our military members who are overseas. This story, however, is a story-within-a-story, and it bears witness to the closeness that not only members of the Green River Education Association share, but the closeness of an entire community. Part of the Veteran's Day Program involves the creation of posters by the 5th and 6th grade MIS students. These posters each include a Green River veteran's name, branch of service, and the conflict in which the veteran was involved. These posters are then placed in visible places throughout the community. The majority of these posters are veterans who are family members of MIS students. Occasionally, however, there is a community request for the students to create a sign for a beloved veteran who has no relative at MIS. Prior to this year's Veteran's Day Program, a local veteran, Danny Krause, who was born in Green River in 1945 and has lived in Wyoming his entire life (all but 6 of those years in Green River), visited MIS and made a simple request. He advised that he has been looking for several years for his name to appear on one of the posters, but has failed to find it. One of the Green River Education Association (GREA) members, Lori Hastert, happened to be present when this story was told. Mr. Krause, who has health conditions, explained that he would like to see his name on a Left to right: John Lee (6th grade teacher), Alexis Love (student volunteer), Danny Krause (veteran), Francisco Valenzuela (student volunteer), Lori Hastert (6th grade teacher), Scott Gaffey (5th grade teacher & Air National Guard Member).
