27 Q4 2017 / CINEMONTAGE WOMEN'S COMMIT TEE T he Women's Steering Committee, a branch of the Editors Guild's Diversity Committee, would like to address the recent events concerning Harvey Weinstein, Roy Price, Tyler Grasham, et al. We are here to listen. We are here to share. We are here to give voice to your experiences. The brave women and men who have come forward with their personal stories of being subjected to, or witnessing, sexual harassment, bullying, intimidation and the misuse of power in our industry have shocked and outraged many within and outside of our community. None of these stories is new. We have all heard them again and again throughout many years of abuse. Sadly, they have been going on for far too long. It is past the time for change. In the coming months, our committee will be aligning and coordinating with the Guild's other sub-committees of the Diversity Committee to speak with one strong, clear voice on this issue. We have been working closely with the Guild's leadership and its Board of Directors to ensure not only that there is — and will continue to be — a safe place to report incidents of sexual harassment and other abusive work environments, but that those who report will have the strength of our Guild to support and protect them as well. We at the Women's Steering Committee are listening to you. Please do not be afraid to speak out. For more information, please read the recent letter Cathy Repola, the Guild's National Executive Director, sent out to the membership providing much further detail: http://cinemontage.org/2017/11/mpeg-statement-workplace- harassment-discrimination/ Stop Harassment Now! A Statement from the Women's Steering Committee MEMBERSHIP OUTREACH increased penalties. But what conversations or actions can we start in the workplace to change the culture? A crew lunch, maybe, or a quick coffee break away from the cutting room with a colleague or two? Picture editors, have you spoken to your assistants about what their future career goals are and advised them as to how those can be achieved? Sound editors and mixers, what recent conversations have you had with colleagues about current issues facing the sound community? Overall, what ideas do you have that we can share with the membership about changing the culture? The Membership Outreach Committee wants to hear from you. Contact us at outreach@editorsguild.com or on the "I Am the Union" Facebook page. Due to the successful turnout at the General Membership meetings, we would like to have additional town hall-type gatherings next year with the membership, the Board of Directors and the Guild's executive staff. One suggestion from New York was for the Guild to send more e-mails to the membership soliciting information about current issues, and then using these town hall meetings to expand the conversation. The committee would like the opportunity to develop any ideas or action plans that members suggest regarding the "Change the Culture" or "Lunch Is Not a Luxury" campaigns. In addition, we will continue to hold roundtable meetings, Master Classes and various panel discussions. f One Lunch at a Time CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24 SIMPSON JOINS GUILD AS FIELD REPRESENTATIVE Matthew Simpson has joined the Editors Guild as a Field Representative in the Los Angeles office. Hailing from the East Coast, Simpson is a graduate of Emerson College. He moved to Los Angeles after graduation and began his career in the industry as a post-production assistant on The Wolfman (2010). Since then he has served as an assistant editor on a variety of productions, ranging from reality TV to features, and became an Editors Guild member in 2012. Most recently, he worked on this year's War for the Planet of the Apes. He is excited to join the team at the Editors Guild as he embarks on a new chapter of his career. "Having worked as an assistant editor, Matt will make a great addition to our team," commented Scott George, the Guild's Western Executive Director. Given his background in picture editorial, Simpson will be heavily involved in representing members in those classifications. Simpson is recently married and enjoys long walks on the beach with his wife Caryn and their dog Grady. When not at work, he can usually be found watching The Wire or loudly supporting the five-time Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots.
