Fall 2017 The Costume Designer 53 Also shooting in Atlanta until March, CD Ernesto Martinez is thrilled to be working on Lee Daniels' newest series Star, airing on Fox TV. Newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, and Brittany O'Grady play three talented young women who have their sights set on music stardom, with Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt rounding out the stellar cast. Martinez praises the show's creative consultant Jahil Fisher as a tour de force, and counts himself very fortunate to have a creative and talented crew. He refers to his ACD as a godsend, and the set crew as amazing. Creatively fun to design, Star features musical performances in period and modern costumes complement- ing the edgy choreography, and nails a variety of current trends from urban to high fashion chic on a multicultural cast. Martinez exclaims, "I shop from the Goodwill on Peachtree to Christian Dior on Buck- head for the same episode and I hope it shows on screen!" CD Molly Maginnis is currently in Paris (le sigh!) designing sea- son two of Amazon's Patriot, with CD Brenda Maben supervising. Creator Steve Conrad is writing and directing all eight episodes, de- veloping a new, more expansive world. We follow intelligence officer John Tavner (Michael Dorman), his family, friends, and foes through Europe. Maginnis says the returning cast is probably the nicest, most brilliant group of actors she's worked with in years. They've all bonded … traveling, dining, and touring the city together as friends, as well as colleagues. Maginnis raves, "Ç'est Magnifique to be living like a Parisian in an apartment near the Place de la République, shop- ping the abundant boutiques, while admiring the Parisians looking so chic in their leather jackets … as long as you can negotiate the streets with the thousands of motorcycles!" Ryan Destiny, Jude Demorest, and Brittany O'Grady in Star The cast of Patriot Returning for a third season of cheeky double entendres, Lucifer has relocated to Los Angeles from Canada. CD Julia Schklair has taken over designing the series with its handsome devil incar- nate and celestial beings, revamping the characters to bring the sexy back. The Bruckheimer show stars Lauren German, Tom Welling, and Tom Ellis as Lucifer, wearing bespoke suits and shirts by Di Stefano. Tom Ellis as Lucifer After 15 months aboard the USS Discovery, CD Gersha Phil- lips has been hanging out with Star Fleet Officers, Vulcans, Klingons, and all kinds of aliens. With the wrap of Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery, Phillips can officially say she is on her way to conquering outer space. In an effort to design realistic costumes for life in space, Phillips collaborated with spacesuit designers FBFX in London, as well as Jet Propulsion Laboratories which construct and develop spacecraft. She traveled to Switzerland for fabrics and shopped glob- ally for the most futuristic textiles, notions, and supplies, along with using the newest technologies from surface printing and 3D print- ing, foil enhancement, textile bonding, thermoplastics, and molding. ILL Christian Cordella was her primary illustrator, while CD Daniel Lim collaborated for episodes 101 and 102. Considering it an honor and a journey to contribute to the latest iteration of the world of Star Trek, Phillips certainly learned the meaning of "boldly going where no one has gone…" as designing costumes for 239 years in the future requires a Costume Designer to reach beyond the stars.
