All three models feature a newly developed 15x optical zoom lens (35mm film equivalent: 25.5mm– 382.5mm), to support 4K recording, alongside a 1.0- inch CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC DV 6 image-pro- cessing platform, to produce stunning 4K/60p recording across the entire zoom range. In addition, the compact and lightweight body designs measure approximately 5.3 inches in length x 3.8 inches in height x 8.4 inches in depth and weigh approxi- mately 40.5oz, 40.3oz and 40.2oz for the XF405, XF400 and VIXIA HF GX10, respectively. According to the company, all three camcorders provide users with fast, highly accurate focusing through intuitive touch-panel operations and fea- ture Dual Pixel CMOS AF — a technology that offers smooth Auto Focus (AF) operation with high-track- ing capabilities. The XF405 4K UHD, the XF400 4K UHD and the VIXIA HF GX10 4K UHD video camcorders are scheduled to be available in November for estimated retail prices of $3499, $2999 and $2499, respectively. PANASONIC Previewed earlier this year at the Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood, CA, Panasonic (http://business.panaso- nic.com/products-professionalvideo) revealed some additional details, including pricing and specification data, about its upcoming AU-EVA1 5.7K handheld cinema camera. Scheduled to ship this fall, the EVA1 carries a suggested list price of $7,495. Technical specifications now include a pixel count of 5720 H x 3016 V (17.25 million), confirmed Dual Native ISO ratings of 800 and 2,500 and 14-stops of dynamic range. The newly-designed EVA1 sensor is Super-35 sized (24.60mm x 12.97mm) with 5.7K resolution. With an active resolution of 5720 x 3016, the EVA1 delivers more than 17.25 million photosites, nearly double the 8.8 million for 4K DCI (4096 x 2160). A key feature of the VariCam cameras, Dual Native ISO utilizes a process that allows the sensor to be read in a fundamentally different way, extract- ing more information without degrading the image. This results in a camera that can switch from a standard sensitivity to a high sensitivity with almost no increase in noise or other artifacts. The EVA1's Dual Native ISOs are 800 and 2,500, which will allow cinematographers to shoot in al- most any lighting environment. The EVA1 delivers 14-stops of dynamic range, en- abling fine gradation in exposure from bright to dark. The EVA1 features full V-Log/V-Gamut capture to best utilize high dynamic range and broad colors. V-Log has log curve characteristics that are HDR ready and V-Gamut delivers a color space that will cover BT.2020. The camera's body weighs 2.65 pounds with a compact form factor (6.69-inches high x 5.31-inches wide x 5.23-inches deep) and a removable hand- grip. It can be used for efficient handheld shooting applications, can be mounted on a drone, gimbal rig or jib arm and is ideal for indie filmmakers. The camera can record in several formats and compression rates, and offers up to 10-bit 4:2:2 even in 4K. For in-camera recording, users can capture in 4K (4096 x 2160), UHD (3840 x 2160), 2K (2048 x 1080), full HD (1920 x 1080) and HD (1280 x 720). In a future firmware upgrade, EVA1 will offer all Intra compression for in-camera recording and 5.7K RAW output to third-party recorders. PANAVISION Panavision (http://dxl.panavision.com) shared de- velopments for its large-format, 8K Millennium DXL camera at IBC 2017, in conjunction with Ambient Recording and Colorfront. Senior vice president of innovation, Michael Cioni, provided hands-on demon- strations highlighting these hardware and software integrations, as well as the latest DXL firmware. "The DXL ecosystem includes not just all the optics, accessory and color science expertise of Panavision companies, but also smart integrations with other manufacturers to enhance workflow throughout production and post," notes Cioni. "At the Ambient stand, DXL's internal Ambient Communication Network chip was the first fully-integrated camera to use this new system. Built-in ACN allows wireless timecode and auto- matic metadata capture that is a perfect fit for DXL's metadata-rich files." Outside the RAI, DXL was used in Colorfront's suite at the Okura Hotel, where a live demon on the 22 nd floor featured a UHD feed on display show- ing an end-to-end 4K HDR workflow. Cioni adds, "ColorFront has been the leader in file-based dailies and now is becoming the leader of 4K HDR master- ing. Their technology and forward-thinking sensibil- ity makes them an ideal partner for DXL's advanced 8K workflow. Thanks to ColorFront, 8K capture is an easy process that has the speed, fluidity and famil- iarity of a 1080p workflow." At both installations, Cioni discussed the updates available in DXL's latest firmware release (v.0.5.35.5), which includes optimizations in the camera's image pipeline from sensor calibration to the built-in color science from Light Iron. GOPRO During a special event at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco last month, GoPro, Inc. (www.gopro.com) founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman unveiled several new cameras, including the company's HERO6 Black, which it touts as its "most powerful and convenient GoPro, yet," as well as Fusion, with the ability to capture immersive 5.2K spherical content. HERO6 (currently available for $499.99) is powered by GoPro's custom-designed GP1 pro- cessor, delivering 4K60 and 1080p240 video with advanced video stabilization. In addition, it features a rugged, waterproof design. Using the QuikStory feature inside the GoPro App, HERO6 Black can automatically transform footage into cinematic QuikStory videos that users can then share. GoPro also reports that HERO6 has dramatically improved dynamic range and low-light performance to make things pop, with an added digital zoom. GoPro also launched Fusion (available now for $699.99), its waterproof, mountable 5.2K spheri- cal camera. Fusion captures the full surroundings while relying on its gimbal-like stabilization to ensure a smooth image. The new camera is also compatible with the GoPro App to play back and share footage as VR content.
