COMPETITIONS e're standing in the country that invented cocktails," Bacardi Brand Ambassador and cocktail innovator Juan Coronado declared on June 29 during the History Happy Hour cocktail competition at the National Archives. Coronado co-emceed the event, themed "Global Spirits, American Cocktails," with Rachel Burkons, Vice President and Associate Publisher for The Tasting Panel. Nine bartenders, from Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Richmond, Virginia, were asked to create an original cocktail highlighting a spirit from around the world—while giving it a decidedly American slant. Each participant was given ten minutes to shake, stir and impress the judges: Meridith May, Executive Editor and Publisher of The Tasting Panel; Dane Nakamura, Corporate Beverage Director with Voltaggio Restaurant Group; Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero; and bartender and educator Duane Sylvestre. The spirit is the body and essence of the cocktail, Coronado said, and that evening the bartenders made them shine.
