1 10  /  the tasting panel  /  september 2017 I t's an average day during the early 1800s in the Chartrons district of Bordeaux. A seagull circles and lands on one of the barrels of Bordelais wine stacked on the second tier of a neatly-arranged row. Haughty sailing ships traversing the bend of the Garonne River approach the quay to collect this beloved inventory. Barely heard under the chatter of seagulls and French dockworkers, Irish, Dutch and English merchants and brokers mutter their respec- tive languages under their breath—probably some complaint having to do with logistic efficiency—as cranes move pallets onto ships. Jean Marie Calvet, the 19-year-old son of a wine- maker from Tain-l'Hermitage, takes in this sight. He knows as a Frenchman it will be difficult to join this epicenter of the French wine trade, but his memories of his father in his family's vineyard compels him to try. Getting Reacquainted with History Maison Calvet on a warm Bordeaux night. CALVET WINES ON TURNING 200 AND ITS RETURN TO THE U.S. by Jessie Birschbach Calvet's logo: an eagle Jean- Marie Calvet claims to have seen in both his vineyards in the Rhône and in Bordeaux and con- sidered his family's protector.
