For artists who do this in pencil and paper, there is no problem. Guess what—the original Apollo hardware was drawn that way. Hall of Fame Set Designer John Bruce could do this with his eyes shut. I cannot. Based on non-engineered assumptions, the foam walls needed to be six inches thick to support the volume. Advanced Foam's initial cost estimate came in above $60,000 and that was out of reach for this project. The next approach was to go back to the standard Hollywood space rental companies, and since Production Designer Bruce Alan Miller had worked on the Apollo 13 movie, he was familiar with the capsule at WonderWorks Inc. in Canoga Park. As Set Designers, our initial surveys from outside source material are useful before we get our hands on the real thing. I worked off two resources: website research and hands-on measurements from existing units. Conflicts were dealt with while still working up budget drawings and adjustments were made flexibly to the add- on set pieces with flexibility. The working drawings included here reflect parts done in-house by construction craftsmen, and others manufactured by the foam fabricator. The outside pieces were delivered and revealed discrepancies when measured with my crooked tape. All designers try their best, breaking down the fabricator's parts and preparing all the CNC documents, but in the end, we have to rely on the set construction team to do its best work and resolve problems. Graphic Designer Carolyn Baumert particularly thanked me for the detailed drawing of the cone shape, with its accurate location of the window openings and decals, vinyls and signage that needed to be applied to the craft. ADG Above: Various drawings by Mr. Miehe of the way that the WonderWorks capsule could be modified to work for the production, as well as sections through the much more complicated SpaceX Dragon method.
