Wrestling with
Hollywood in 1985
In 1985, I was one of those geeky
teenagers obsessed with fi lm and
television who more than anything loved
a complicated narrative fi lled with daring
spectacle. Preferring collaboration to
competition, I didn't care much about
sports, let alone what I (and most
others) perceived to be the fake sport
of wrestling. I was fully aware of Hulk
Hogan, Rick Flair and that women's
wrestling show that aired after cartoons
on Saturdays...but I didn't quite get it.
