build a set exclusively out of logs...not their first rodeo with giant timber. The greens crew in Vancouver, led by Glenn Foerster who had helped me on Dawn, is a true force of nature. Matt was eager to reflect the mania that had gripped this particular group of humans and together, we searched for a way to reflect their compulsion. In the research, looking into the histories of various cults, we came across a collection of neatly handwritten signs from Jonestown, Guyana. We began to experiment with this kind of graffiti, using inspirational phrases and covering huge areas of the set with typography. Graphic Designer Andrew Campbell proved invaluable in the delicate dance to find a look for this type and a way to lay it out. The font couldn't feel too machined, too shaky, too illegible. In the end, he found the perfect weight and balance to communicate these ideas, and they became a big character in the film. Construction took five months and hundreds of tons of steel and timbers.
