Summer 2017 The Costume Designer 11 Dear Members, This is an exciting time to be part of the Costume Designers Guild. Recently, we have hit several milestones with the most prominent being our new home. Our latest achievement is reaching the 1,000 members mark which is very exciting to us. When I became a member of this Guild, it was about 550 members and considered a small Local. At almost double that amount, we are no longer considered small. Many worry that there will not be enough work for everyone but that fear has been echoed by members since the early sixties. With the rapid growth of new media and new formatting for television production, work opportunities are increasing at a rapid pace and I can only foresee more growth in the future. As a union, we meet the changing landscape of the industry head on. There are new contracts being negotiated all the time and a record number of nonunion projects being unionized. This gives our members more opportuni- ties than ever before to work under union terms and conditions. There are also changes happening within the Local. This last year, we increased our staff with an Assistant Executive Director, Brigitta Romanov. Our Education Committee is hard at work providing classes for members to obtain educational tools of the trade and to add to their skills. We are having more social events so that members can interact and exchange information in a fun setting. This summer, we added a movie night where we feature a film and focus on the Costume Design process for that film. An American in Paris was our premiere film this July. We urge our members to take part in all that the Guild offers them both contractually, socially, and educationally. Drop by the office and get to know our staff better. We are always happy to put a face to a name. Have a great summer and work safely.
