34 The Costume Designer Summer 2017 Continuing their long-term collaboration—their 13th to be exact— CD Mary Zophres is very excited to be designing the Coen Broth- ers' next project, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, an anthology miniseries of six short stories from 1850s to 1880s, all Westerns and all wildly different. Tim Blake Nelson, Willie Watson, Liam Nee- son, and Zoe Kazan star in various stories, while music legend Tom Waits stars in the tale called "All Gold Canyon," about a prospector looking for gold. Zophres names Waits as one of her favorite fittings ever! A huge fan of his music and lyrics for years, to meet him in person was a thrill, even more so when he sang for her during his fitting. In so many, many ways, Zophres is a lucky girl! IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES BFN - WORK CD Karyn Wagner just finished shooting the miniseries Waco in New Mexico, starring Michael Shannon as FBI negotiator Gary No- esner and Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh. The script, which Wagner calls "amazing," is based on two books, A Place Called Waco by survivor David Thibodeau, and Stalling for Time by Gary Noesner. The series is an honest evaluation of the situation written largely by director John Dowdle, producer Drew Dowdle, and showrunner Salvatore Stabile for Weinstein Company and Spike TV for the new Paramount TV. Wagner's secret weapon? Patin-A distressing creme from Jürgen Knoll, a fellow Costume Designer in Germany. She says, "When you see the colors, you'll want to shout with delight." We are intrigued. As a fun and lighthearted departure from the fantasy/sci-fi genre that CD Ami Goodheart finds as her trademark "comfort zone," some little commercials with a big hearted message have made these cine- matic TV spots as visually pleasing as those that would feature actual human actors! The series of PSA commercials for Ad Council for Dia- betes Awareness created an opportunity for director Luc Schurgers and Goodheart to playfully create colorful tableaux and installations with rambunctious puppies in '80s-inspired sporty garb, eight ador- able baby goats dressed in custom-made disco-themed pajamas, as well as an animated cast of African pygmy hedgehogs clad in resort wear! This ad campaign with Schurgers is their fifth collaboration thus far, and designing the campy, tiny outfits for the critters was just another weird and wonderful job for Goodheart. Ami Goodheart works with cute critters CD Carey Bennett is back designing the second season of Superior Donuts on CBS with an all-star and multi-generational cast consisting of Judd Hirsch, Katey Sagal, David Koechner, and Jermaine Fowler. Navigating strict clearance practices at CBS has made her rely on the artwork of amazing graphic artists to make custom T-shirts to lend authenticity to the Chicago-based story. Her most inspiring collabo- ration has been with graffiti artist Josh Webb (MrJoshwebb@gmail .com) who has painted sweatshirts, shoes, jackets and overalls with his signature graffiti. Carey Bennett teams up with graphic artists Excited for the opportunity to work a second time with director Will Eubank on his first big-budget studio fea- ture, CD Dorotka Sapinska is the Costume Designer re- sponsible for Kristen Stew- art's edgy new buzz-cut look for Underwater … which created quite a "buzz." Also starring Vincent Cassel, TJ Miller, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher, and Mamoudou Athie. The Fox feature sto- rylines a crew of underwa- ter researchers who must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. Prepping for two weeks in Los Angeles with ACD Erica Rice, Sapinska custom-made the Underwater research- ers' jackets at Serj Costumes & Tailoring, before shooting in New Orleans with a team from Legacy Effects, who made the deep-pres- sure dive suits that walk on the bottom of the ocean.
