july 2017  /  the tasting panel  /  71 Q&A with Kelly Peterson Bates What are your three favorite bands? Jane's Addiction, The Pixies, The Clash, The Beach Boys and Björk—it's hard to pick just three. What was your favorite concert and why? Probably my first one, which was The Beach Boys and The Turtles. I was prob- ably seven years old, if that. This was the jumping off point, the initial exposure to live music and I instantaneously fell in love with it. Since then, I have attended too many concerts to count. Name a song that has made you cry? All of them at some point in time or another. Music hits a certain sensitive note with me, so if I am in the right mood for a good cry, any and all songs are fair game. But if I had to pick just one, "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys. This is the magnum opus for me. It is easily my favorite song and the first song that played after my husband and I got married. Tears of joy on that day! Which song would be your "walk up to the plate song," if you were a MLB player? "Stop" by Jane's Addiction. This was the first song that popped in my head. It seems rather appropriate. Which other art form inspires you? The written word. I read a lot. PHOTO: ALEXANDER RUBIN Wente Vineyards 2014 Small Lot Brut. Members of Wolf Hamlin and the Front Porch Drifters. Master Sommelier diploma, it dawned on me that I had also placed music on the back burner, almost subconsciously. I teared up a little as I realized just how disconnected I had become to my first love. I realized that I was the one that Karl Wente was trying to reach with this movement. I realized that I was the one that had to find a way to make time for music. I must thank Karl Wente for his commitment to this wonderful program and I would like for him to know that it is effective and inspiring. He is succeeding. He inspired this "former" musician and I thank him for that. I left the event, eager to get home to a guitar or a piano, to reunite with a passion that I had somehow let slip away during the day-to- day demands. I realize that I have some scheduling work to do to find the work/play balance, but for the moment, I will begin with one small step in the right direction. I will pick up an instrument and play. I will begin making time for music. And I urge you to do the same. PHOTO: REBECCA PEPLINSKI PHOTO: REBECCA PEPLINSKI PHOTO: REBECCA PEPLINSKI
