Spring 2017 The Costume Designer 41 IN FOCUS BOLDFACE NAMES In another great collaboration with director Koichi Iguchi highlight- ing their work together in the fantasy-genre, CD Ami Goodheart has just completed shooting the first two commercials for the up- coming campaign for Kirin beer. The campaign focuses around a nomadic character known as "The Wind Man," played by the very handsome and popular Japanese actor, Eita. The first half of filming was shot in Guam with its backdrop of natural jungles and beautiful rolling hills. Goodheart and her team had the challenge of being on location in the middle of nowhere, hours away from basic re- sources, although they were entertained by water buffalo, wild boar, and snakes! Wind Man's custom-made costume includes an embellished suede leather cape nine yards in width that had to be functional and "fly" with the character during his stunt. Goodheart committed to the theme and chose 100 percent natural materials, including closures made from wood and shells, silk, feathers, and real amber and tiger's-eye stones. BFN - WORK Coming onboard for the fourth and final season, CD Delphine White is designing FX's The Strain. From the creative minds of Carl- ton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, and Chuck Hogan, the series picks up nine months after Season 3, when an explosion triggered a global nuclear apocalypse. This required White to create distinct charac- ter representations pertinent to the environment they inhabit in the new world order, while still maintaining the iconic look of the established characters. Working closely with production designer Tamara Deverell and director of photography Miroslaw Baszak, she tested fabric colors and the response to the various filters used at each of the three locations. White says the most challenging and fun costumes revolved around period scenes and some new fantastical characters. CD Caroline B. Marx and ACD Michelle Green are together again, this time in Atlanta wrap- ping up Valor, a new pilot for CBS/CW about one of the first female helicopter pilots in an elite unit of the US Army, trained to perform clandestine international and domestic mis- sions. Working with military experts at Western Costume, Marx was the first to use new multi-camouflage uniforms. WCC President and CD Eddie Marks paid a visit on set to see the costumes in action—or was it just for the Black Hawk heli- copters? Christina Ochoa plays the lead with Matt Barr, Charlie Barnett, and Melissa Roxburgh rounding out the cast. Director Michael M. Robin and writer Kyle Jarrow both executive pro- duced along with Bill Haber, Jeffrey Hayes, and Anna Fricke. BBS/CW's pilot, Valor Left: Corey Stoll, The Strain CD Mynka Draper is busy designing Season 2 of FX's Better Things. The storyline of a single mother with three daughters working as an actress in Los Angeles is loosely based on the life of director, writer, and lead actress Pamela Adlon. The series shows female family love and friendship, in all its messy glory. Fun times on the set of this season's Better Things Ami Goodheart's "The Wind Man" for Kirin beer
