The election began Feb. 7, when ballots were mailed to 148 eligible voters, resulting in a historic pro-union decision. Telemundo performers showed their support for SAG-AFTRA's organizing efforts by sharing messages of strength and solidarity with prospective voters in the upcoming election. They took to social media, turning the historic vote into a trending online topic on numerous occasions. It was proof that the need for equality, no matter the language, transcends borders and cultures. "I am proud of my fellow actors for taking this bold step that puts us on a path toward equality in the entertainment industry," said SAG-AFTRA member and Telemundo performer Pablo Azar. "We are making history, and we look forward to Telemundo's continued success as we work together toward changes and equality in the industry." Despite the overwhelming vote in favor, SAG-AFTRA's campaign was met with resistance, as Telemundo's management team engaged in efforts to suppress organizing activity, mounting an anti- union campaign to intimidate actors into voting no. Telemundo's campaign included threats to performers' livelihood and moving production to Mexico. SAG-AFTRA filed multiple unfair labor practice charges related to the employer's anti-union tactics. "Voting to join SAG-AFTRA under these circumstances required tremendous courage," SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White said. "I want to welcome Telemundo performers to our worldwide professional family. We know this vote also will help Telemundo grow and flourish, and we look forward to negotiating with them to achieve a fair, first contract for our members."
