EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR A CONTEMPORARY FEATURE FILM DAVID WASCO, Production Designer AUSTIN GORG, Supervising Art Director STEVEN LIGHT-ORR, CASSIDY SHIPLEY, Assistant Art Directors CARL SPRAGUE, JOANNA BUSH, Concept Illustrators TINA CHARAD, Lead Graphic Designer GEOFFREY MANDEL, Graphic Designer ROCCO GIOFFRE, Matte Glass Artist ANDREW LEUNG, Illustrator KEVIN CROSS, Lead Set Designer DANIEL BRADFORD, Set Designer SANDY REYNOLDS-WASCO, SDSA, Set Decorator © Lionsgate Top, right: Much of LA LA LAND was shot on location in Los Angeles, using the city as a character, but sometimes the musical numbers required a romantic look that could only be achieved onstage. Inset: Accepting the award for David Wasco, who was at the BAFTA Awards that night, were Kim Richey, (Assistant Prop Master), Venessa De Anda (Art Department Coordinator), Austin Gorg, Steven Light-Orr, Erin Fite (Assistant Set Decorator) and Joanna Bush. Above: The look of the film was heavily informed by THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT and THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, both of which used primary colors, such as the pillows here in Mia's apartment. Right: Small towns in Eastern New Mexico stood in for West Texas, just a few miles away over the border, in HELL OR HIGH WATER. The careful design relied heavily on removing extraneous detail to create the empty, hopeless feel of dry-land farmers who have lost all hope.
