119 2015-2016 2016 LEWES POLAR BEAR PLUNGE Special Olympics Delaware celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge in 2016, where just a week prior, a late January nor'easter blew through the east coast. Thanks to beach replenishment by DNREC and the City of Rehoboth, the Plunge went on with great success. There were 3,501 Polar Bears who braved the chilly Atlantic Ocean for Special Olympics Delaware and raised $820,000. The water was 43 degrees and the air temperature was a brisk 45 degrees for the 25th annual Polar Bear Plunge. Over the past 25 years, participants have raised thousands of dollars in funds which helps support our year-round sports programming for more than 4,000 Special Olympics Delaware athletes. Law Enforcement for Special Olympics supports the Plunge, along with hundreds of volunteers who make this fun family event memorable and safe for everyone. Presented by
