The stor y depar tment creates an initial outline for the editors to follow. "After that structure is made, the editor has a lot of cre- ative freedom to choose and make it work visually and dramatically, as they see fit," Lichtenstein notes. "It's really a team effor t. One episode will have as many as four edi- tors work on it, and we just divide and con- quer. One editor will be assigned the first act, one editor might take the judges' table. We're not really dedicated to those areas, it's just sor t of how the chips fall and how the assignments happen." The studio will spend approximately three weeks making this initial edit. The show will then be sent to the network for review. "It goes back and for th a few times," he says of the review process.
