WEA President Kathy Vetter called over 425 first-time WEA members and welcomed them to the association. During these calls, she found some trends as to why people join. Not surprisingly, the number one reason people join is because they were asked, but looking at that a little closer, she found that being asked by someone they trust who works in the same building or department was the number one reason people joined. Also being asked by a local leader was high on the list of reasons. Another was because the building and/or local was seen as being active and involved. Wanting a voice at the state level, concern about what might happen with funding at the state level, and member benefits were additional reasons mentioned a number of times. President Vetter emphasized, "It is important that local members take the time to talk to all of the potential members in their buildings. It is those personal conversations that are instrumental in growing our membership and strengthening our voice at both the state and local levels." Grab 3 is yet another indication of how members value their membership and want to share that aspect with their coworkers. WEA fosters a sense of community--an ability to use peers, as well as the Association, as resources to deal with the day-to-day challenges found in the schools. Under the Grab 3 program, a total of five free WEA membership dues (one per region) will be awarded at the 2017 Delegate Assembly. This only applies to your WEA dues; 2017-2018 NEA and local dues will still need to be paid by you. To be included in the drawing for your region, completed new membership forms must be received at the WEA office with your name in the "Recruited By" section at the bottom of the form. For every three new members you recruit, your name will be entered once. There is no limit! Note: New members must continue their membership through the 2017-2018 year for you to be eligible. You will only be entered into the drawing for new members recruited between November 15 th through March 31 st .
