november 2016  /  the tasting panel  /  93 Black Moth Vodka, the only black truffle–infused spirit in the world, made its debut for the first time in the U.S. in Las Vegas at Sage inside Aria on September 19 with a launch party that was attended by the city's most influential buyers. Created by Paul Amin in England, the distinctive velvety taste of the vodka used to create Black Moth was devel- oped by using authentic artisanal techniques, which originally started out as a personal experiment. "I was given quite a lot of winter truffles as a gift, and one day I decided to pop one in a bottle of vodka," says Amin. "When I rediscov- ered it later, I tried it and it was delicious!" After much research, Amin perfected the first-ever truffle vodka in 2007, and following the launch of his spirit in other parts of the world—including England, Greece, Portugal and China—Black Moth arrived in Las Vegas. Throughout the evening, guests indulged in the opportunity to discover the versatility of Black Moth use in savory and sweet cocktails and the subtle nuances of its flavor by imbibing on signature drinks created by four acclaimed Las Vegas mixologists: Wendy Hodges, Derick Baumgartner, Timothy Baer and Andrew Tau.
