BACK TO SCHOOL 2016 | wyoea.org 13 Peru: My Global Experience by Dirk Andrews is pulling students from around the country and providing them with an amazing educational experience with the goal of growing their education system and their economy. It was eye- opening to see the value Peru has placed on public education. The third lesson I learned was that although Wyoming is far from Peru, we still experience the same frustrations in education. I have never met an educator who does not want the best for his or her students, and the same rings true in Peru. While in a small rural area outside of Cusco, we had the opportunity to sit down with Peruvian educators who expressed frustration with the constant changes in education. They commented on the difficulty of becoming a master of the trade when standards are constantly changing. Finally, they expressed concern about the emphasis placed on test scores, especially considering the lack of information a single test score provides about a student. More and more, I see that we are not alone and we all face similar challenges. The final lesson I learned was about the value Peruvian students have for their education. I work with students on a daily basis who don't see the value in coming to school to get an education. In my opinion, American students don't view school as a means to getting out in the world, but a daunting task they dislike. On the other hand, the Peruvians want their children to learn, and the students are eager to go to school. My hope for students in the United States is that they can see how lucky they are to get the education we are providing. Peru was an experience I will never forget, and the journey will forever remain a part of who I am!
